The medical system in Canada is similar to that of the UK in that you do not pay to see your GP or to attend Casualty or for referrals to specialists. The exception is dentistry, chiropracty and opticians who charge. Most employers offer medical packages to their employees which cover some or all of these costs.
All family members must have a Nova Scotia Health Card (MSI) to use the health system. This should be one of the first things you do when arriving. To have the forms sent to you, telephone MSI toll free within Nova Scotia at 1-800-563-8880 or see online for information at http://www.gov.ns.ca/health/msi/health_cards.asp
